Republican
Women's Clubs History
|
The
history of Republican women’s
clubs is an interesting tale
that dates back over a century
ago.
It all began as a result
of the Republican Platform of
1872, which stated "The
Republican Party is mindful of
its obligation to the loyal
women of America for their noble
devotion to the cause of
freedom..."
|
|
In
the years following this
platform, Republican women’s
clubs were initiated all over
the nation. The oldest club on
record was founded in Salt Lake
City in the late 1800’s. This
was an amazing accomplishment at
that time, considering women
didn’t win the right to vote
until 1920. Another
victory for women came years
later in 1938, when the
assistant chairman of the
Republican National Committee,
Marion Martin, called a meeting
at the Palmer House in Chicago
in efforts to unite these women’s
clubs into a national
organization. Martin was
described by her colleagues as a
leader, an activist and a strong
force behind the Republican
party. Thanks
to Martin’s efforts, the
National Federation of
Republican Women was
established. Over the years,
NFRW has grown in size, strength
and force. With over 100,000
members and about 1,800 clubs, NFRW is
one of the largest political
party organizations in the
country.
