Weekly Happenings

Two days ago marked the 10th Anniversary of the loss of the crew of the space shuttle Columbia. I remember that day, Saturday morning, clear and cool. We were actually watching the local news, waiting to see the landing. I’ve never seen a shuttle landing, live on tv, so I was very excited. The time for the landing came and went, and no shuttle. I remember the concern starting to show on the newscasters faces, and then the announcement that NASA was going into their contingency mode. From excitement to sadness and grief so quickly. I remember President Bush giving a short, eloquent speech later that day commemorating the event and the lives of the brave souls on board the shuttle that day. If you get a chance, I would recommend reading “Comm Check..The Final Flight of Shuttle Columbia”, by Michael Cabbage and William Hardwood. An excellent accounting of that day, events from months and years previous leading up to that day and lastly, an accounting of what was going on in the Shuttle during those last moments. An Amazing read.

Couple of Club reminders: PLEASE, if you have not yet renewed your membership, take care of that this week. We need each and every one of you if our Club is to be successful. We have some great plans for this year, don’t miss out! Also, if you are planning to attend the FFRW Spring Conference, be sure to register NOW for this event. It’s from Sunday March 3 – Tuesday March 5. You can go to www.ffrw.net to register on line, it takes only a few minutes. NORWF’s budget allows for reimbursement for up to $75.00 for registration for up to 10 people from our Club to attend. It’s fun and very exciting. The Conference culminates on Tuesday March 5, coinciding with opening day of the Florida 2013 Legislative Session.

A couple of things going on this week; as always, let me know if I’ve missed anything, or something you would like to let our members know about.

Wed Feb 6 – Apopka City Commission meeting, 1:30 at Apopka City Hall. Looks like a full agenda.

Thursday Feb 7 – OCREC District 2 meeting, aprox 7:00 pm, Apopka Chamber of Commerce.

Birthdays this week (2/3 – 2/9) – William “Mac” McGuffin (2/6); Wishing Mr. McGuffin a VERY Special day!

Our Newsletter will be out later this week. Still time to get in a story, or story ideas. This is YOUR newsletter. Enjoy SuperBowl Sunday, cheer for the team of your choice, or enjoy some of those great commercials.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year’s everyone – 2013 – new year full of challenges and possibilities. A good time to get back involved and active once again. My main message today: PLEASE RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP TO NORWF AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! We asking all members to kindly complete the membership application with your renewal. Addresses, phone numbers and interests may change from time to time and by completing this application, we will have the most accurate information we can. We have many committees within our Club and thus many opportunities to volunteer. But if we don’t know how to contact you or where your interests lie, it will be difficult to make sure you are enjoying all our Club has to offer! The application is on our website, www.norwf.org, under the membership tab. Print off the form and send that along with your check for renewal, OR you can bring everything to our Annual Meeting, Thursday Jan 17, 11:00 am at Errol Estate.

NORWF is also proud to announce that several of our members have been elected to leadership roles within the State Republican Party (RPOF) and within Orange County Republican Executive Committee (OCREC). Patty Redlich was elected State Committeewoman from Orange County and then on Friday was elected to be the Congressional District 5 Chairman and now represents CD5 to the Executive Board of RPOF. Congratulations Patty! Also, Kathy Gibson, NORWF Associate member was elected Secretary of OCREC and Associate Member Phil Zakszewski was elected Assistant Secretary to OCREC. Congratulations to all three and much success in your new posts. I am positive all three will represent NORWF well.

We need to ask for special prayers this week for NORWF Associate Member Dale Fenwick. Dale was injured in a fall on New Year’s day. Both arms were broken, he also had surgery to replace an elbow, both wrists were also injured. Amazingly, while Dale suffered a concussion, there was no injuries to his neck, spine, or any vital organs. He is home now, resting. We prayer for his complete recovery and also for strength for both him and Sharon as they deal with his recovery. It will be a long road, but their faith is strong. Please get well soon, Dale. Our prayers are with you and Sharon!

As the year gets started, there are a couple meetings going on this week that may be of interest:

Tuesday January 8, 9:00 am – Orange County Commissioners meeting, at the County Administrative Center, 201 S. Rosalind Avenue.

Thursday January 10, 8:30-11:30 – Orange County Economic Summit, Hosted by Mayor Teresa Jacobs. The Orange County Convention Center, North Concourse, Room 230.

Thursday January 10, 6:30-8:00 pm – City of Apopka Charter Review meeting, at the Apopka VFW. If you can, please make the time to attend this one, as this impacts the way our City will be run.

Birthdays this week: (1/6 – 1/12) – Betty Bracy (1/11); Sharon Fenwick (1/15); Wishing you a Very Happy Day!

Looking ahead, the Call to meeting will go out this week, but please make plans now to attend NORWF’s Annual Meeting, Thursday Jan 17, 11:00 am at Errol Estate. We will look back on 2012 and look ahead to 2013.

Our Newsletter will be out this week; look for some thought-provoking articles and Club information. As always, please let me know if there are any questions or concerns regarding NORWF or any issues you think are important that maybe NORWF can address!

All American Star Spangled Barbecue & Candidate Forum

The Fourth of July celebration continues on in this election year, so come and meet the candidates on the primary and general election ballot at Errol Estate Country Country Club, on July 19, 2012.

Just to name a few candidates so far there are Bryan Nelson, Florida House of Representatives; Christine Moore, Orange County School Board; Vicky Vargo, candidate for Orange County Tax Collector; Dan Fanelli, Florida Congressional candidate – District 8; Sandy Adams or surrogate, Florida Congressional candidate – District 24; LeAnn Kolb, Florida Congressional candidate – District 3; Fritze J. Seide, Florida State Senate candidate – District 19; Dave Weldon, candidate for the United States Senate; and a Surrogate for Presidential candidate – Mitt Romney. Candidates are still coming in to participate in this forum.

What a great opportunity to meet the candidates and participate in a question and answer session, after each one speaks. You can also visit our website, at www.norwf.org, regarding participating candidates.

In keeping with the election year and continuing to celebrate our Independence Day, there will be a patriotic dress-up contest, opportunity drawing, and an all American barbecue lunch with hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, chips, baked beans and water melon.

The NORWF Luncheon Meeting is at Errol Estate Country Club, 1355 Errol Parkway in Apopka and starts at 11 am to 1:30 pm. Cost of the lunch is $20.00. A table is available for those choosing not to eat lunch. Reservations are a must. The RSVP deadline is July 16, 2012. Please contact Sharon Fenwick at 407-880-8210.
